Man dies after Caldwell County high-speed chase

It is unknown at this time what Michael Scott Skelton was being pursued for before the wreck.

CALDWELL COUNTY, N.C. — A man has died after being chased by Caldwell County Sheriff's Department deputies Thursday night.

According to North Carolina State Highway Patrol, Michael Scott Skelton, 41, of Lenoir, North Carolina, was being pursued by the deputies while driving west on Playmore Beach Road when he crossed the road's center line and collided with a tree near Packs Hill Road.

NCSHP responded to the fatal crash at 10:45 p.m.

After the initial investigation NCSHP determined reckless driving and speed contributed to him losing control of his 2015 Ford Fusion.

It is unknown at this time what Skelton was being pursued for before the wreck. WCNC Charlotte has reached out to Caldwell County Sheriff's Department to find out that answer.
