Car stolen from Fort Liberty in 1992 found at bottom of NC lake

Virginia State Police said someone stole the vehicle on July 4, 1992. It was finally found at the bottom of Lake Gaston.

MECKLENBURG COUNTY, Va. — Authorities in Virginia recovered a vehicle from Lake Gaston on Monday that they say was stolen from Fort Liberty over 30 years ago.

The Virginia State Police said someone stole the vehicle, a 1990 Nissan 240 SX, on July 4, 1992, from Fort Liberty, then Fort Bragg.

Officers discovered the vehicle while a rescue unit was using sonar equipment on a training exercise.

Police said officers are now following up on the original stolen vehicle report.
