Man charged with murder, attempted murder after reported road rage incident in Catawba County

Terrell Eugene Giddens, 75, is held in jail under no bond.

CATAWBA COUNTY, N.C. — WCNC Charlotte has chosen to use this mugshot because of the nature of the charges and public nature of the alleged crime.

A Sherrills Ford man is accused of killing another man Saturday afternoon in what the Catawba County Sheriff's Office is calling a road rage incident.

Deputies said they were called to Island Point Road near Northview Harbour Drive just before 5 p.m. Saturday. They arrived to find a man dead of apparent gunshot wounds. Witnesses said another man shot the victim after both stopped and exited their vehicles. The eyewitnesses also said the suspect shot a gun several times into the victim's car, which was occupied by the victim and his three children. The children, who were not harmed, are ages 2, 11 and 13.

"We don’t know exactly what caused the animosity," Maj. Aaron Turk with the Catawba County Sheriff’s Office said. "Both exited their vehicles and began arguing and it was during that time that the suspect brandished a rifle and shot the victim.”

The witnesses gave deputies a description of the suspect and his vehicle, leading the sheriff's office to a home on Island Point Road. Deputies found and arrested 75-year-old Terrell Eugene Giddens at the home.

Giddens is now charged with one count of attempted murder and three counts of attempted first-degree murder. He remains in jail with no bond and will first appear in court on Monday, Oct. 14.

A makeshift memorial of flowers was set up at the location of the shooting on Monday in memory of 40-year-old Jeffery Michael Guida. A woman named Rose was among the neighbors to stop by and pray for Guida's family.

"It’s scary. It’s frightening, you know? And, then you think about it and it just makes you sick to your stomach to think something like that would happen," Rose said. "That’s why I kind of come over here too is to say a little prayer and, you know, have some peace with it, but it doesn’t bring back anything.”

Giddens is being held without bond at the Catawba County jail.

Note: WCNC instituted a policy in March 2021 regarding the broadcast or posting of mugshots.

WCNC will only air or post a mugshot if the person has been formally charged with a crime and in a few other cases. The exceptions include: If it appears the person could be a danger to themselves or others or if they are wanted by authorities; to differentiate between people with a common name; if the photos could encourage more victims to come forward. The news-editorial leadership may also decide to use a mugshot based on the severity of the crime(s) committed and/or the level of public interest in the crime and ensuing criminal proceedings.
