Suspects in South Meck grad's killing have charges dropped, DA announces

The district attorney's office said there isn't enough evidence to charge two people who were linked to Savion Lockhart's killing last summer.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Charges have been dropped against the suspects originally connected to the killing of a South Mecklenburg High School graduate last July, investigators announced on Friday.

District Attorney Spencer Merriweather said there isn't enough evidence to charge two people who were linked to Savion Lockhart's death. Lockhart was killed in a shooting in northeast Charlotte on July 8, 2023. The 17-year-old had recently graduated from South Meck. Another person who was taken to the hospital with Lockhart survived the incident, according to Charlotte-Mecklenburg police.

South Meck's principal confirmed that Lockhart graduated about a month before he was killed. In a message to parents, Mark Angerer said the school was "heartbroken by this loss of life" and CMS offered grief counseling for students and staff members.

At the time, CMPD detectives said two groups of people got into some type of fight that escalated to shots being fired. Exactly what happened wasn't clear at the time. Anyone with information about this case is asked to call Charlotte Crime Stoppers at 704-334-1600.
