Video shows shooting aboard Charlotte light rail

The shooting left one person in the hospital. None of the train's other passengers appear to have been physically injured.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — A new video from a May shooting aboard a Charlotte Area Transit System light rail train shows innocent bystanders ducking for cover.

Shortly after 11 p.m. on May 17, multiple shots were fired during a fight aboard a Blue Line train, the CATS security video shows. The shooting left one person in the hospital.

The apparent shooter ran from the train when the vehicle opened its doors at a station platform.

WCNC Charlotte has reached out to the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department to learn if that person or any other person has been arrested and charged in connection to the shooting.

None of the other bystanders on the train appear to have been physically injured.

Safety and security aboard CATS buses and trains have been a spotlighted discussion since Ethan Rivera, a CATS bus driver, was shot and killed in Feb. 2022. In the month since CATS changed its security firm and changed the company that operates its buses. 

Other security incidents aboard the city's transit system have continued to make the news, including the assault of an off-duty security guard, another shooting of a CATS bus driver, and a fight between a passenger and driver.
