CHARLOTTE, N.C. — A Charlotte man could face up to 20 years in prison for stealing dozens of checks and collecting over $300,000 over a period of around six months, prosecutors announced on Tuesday.
John Calvin Davis III, 27, pleaded guilty to wire fraud for executing a scheme that involved Davis stealing approximately 50 checks from mailboxes between August 2022 and January 2023. Davis admitted to taking the checks, signing them and depositing them into accounts he controlled. He would then withdraw the money before the victims or the bank realized they were stolen. Prosecutors said Davis stole just over $304,000 through the scheme.
Davis was released on bond following his plea. The wire fraud charge carries a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison and a $250,000 fine. A sentencing date hasn't been set.
Note: WCNC instituted a policy in March 2021 regarding the broadcast or posting of mugshots.
WCNC will only air or post a mugshot if the person has been formally charged with a crime and in a few other cases. The exceptions include: If it appears the person could be a danger to themselves or others or if they are wanted by authorities; to differentiate between people with a common name; if the photos could encourage more victims to come forward. The news-editorial leadership may also decide to use a mugshot based on the severity of the crime(s) committed and/or the level of public interest in the crime and ensuing criminal proceedings.
