CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Editor's Note: This story discusses domestic violence, which includes descriptions of violent acts. Reader discretion is advised.
The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department released 911 calls Wednesday detailing a deadly shooting involving officers in August.
It happened just after midnight on Aug. 25 on Roundstone Way, which is a residential area near Reames Road. Officers responded to a domestic violence call. When they arrived, they found a man had stabbed a woman multiple times.
A woman told 911 dispatchers she had been stabbed multiple times by her husband, whom she told 911 dispatchers was deaf.
The woman then reportedly told dispatchers her husband had picked up another knife as she pleaded "please don't." Multiple screams were then heard over the phone.
Officers are then heard confronting the man. An officer fired his weapon, shooting and killing the man, CMPD said.
The woman said she has two daughters, both 4 years old, who were not home at the time of the shooting.
The woman was taken to the hospital with life-threatening injuries, police said.
CMPD told WCNC Charlotte this is the second time a domestic violence situation has ended in gunfire. Kathleen Lockwood with the North Carolina Coalition Against Domestic Violence said, domestic violence homicides in the state are skyrocketing.
"As of Aug. 12, we found evidence of our 45th domestic violence homicide," Lockwood said. "It's only two shy from all of 2022.”
She also said across North Carolina, in one day, over 1,400 people were provided domestic violence services. She said that's more than 300 people per day than what it was a few years back.
The coalition said to prevent events like these, people need to stay educated and know of the resources in the area for domestic violence victims. She said people should also learn and know behavior patterns that could lead to a deadly event.
"Another thing they can do is make sure organizations that provides these treatments and help are funded," Lockwood said.
