Driver flees after hitting, killing pedestrian on Christmas Day, CMPD says

The crash happened on N. Sharon Amity Road near Albemarle Road in east Charlotte.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department is investigating a deadly crash that killed a pedestrian on Christmas Day.

Shortly before 8 p.m. on Christmas Day, officers responded to a crash involving a pedestrian on N. Sharon Amity Road near Albemarle Road.

At the scene of the crash, officers found a 36-year-old man on the sidewalk suffering from injuries related to being hit by a car. 

The driver fled the area before officers arrived. 

Charlotte Fire and Medic also responded, transporting the man, who was suffering from life-threatening injuries to Novant Health. The victim was pronounced dead shortly before 10 p.m.

The initial investigation shows that the male pedestrian was lying in the street wearing dark clothing when a silver 4-door sedan ran him over and fled.

It is not known if the driver was impaired, and the investigation indicates that speed was not a factor in the crash.
