Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools initially said that West Charlotte High School and West Mecklenburg High School were placed under lockdown due to police activity in the area. However, CMS later clarified that the schools were not placed under lockdown. The statement from CMS reads:

"Today, we were notified that CMPD had issued a lockdown to West Chartlotte and West Mecklenburg High schools due to nearby police activity after 11:10 a.m.

After speaking with both principals this afternoon, we learned a lockdown at those locations was not necessitated and did not occur.

Please let your viewers know that CMS and CMPD work together closely when police situations occur near our schools and that sometimes things change rapidly.

Apologies for any inconvenience and we appreciate everything our media partners do to inform our CMS stakeholders about our schools."

At this time, the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department has not released any information about a potential suspect for the shooting.

WCNC Charlotte has reached out to CMPD for further comment.
