Child's death under investigation after police discover she swallowed pills, Gastonia police say

The incident happened shortly before 11 a.m. on Tuesday.

GASTONIA, N.C. — The Gastonia Police Department is conducting a death investigation after a 21-month-old child died on Tuesday.

Shortly before 11 a.m. on Tuesday, police responded to a call at 1698 Lowell Bethesda Road about an unresponsive child who suffered a cardiac arrest. 

While conducting CPR on the child, officers discovered that the child had swallowed unidentified blue pills.

The child was pronounced dead after being taken to the hospital.

Gastonia police arrested 24-year-old Rhonda McNair, who has been charged with Second-Degree Murder without Regard and Felony Neglect Child Abuse.
