Concord man charged with indecent liberties arrested after standoff with US Marshals

U.S. Marshals arrested the suspect after finding him barricaded inside a camper at a Pilot truck stop in Rowan County on July 3.

STATESVILLE, N.C. — A Concord man was arrested in Rowan County after new evidence identified him as the suspect in a child sex abuse investigation in Statesville, police said.

Statesville police were notified of possible abuse involving a young child in December 2019. After interviewing the victim and collecting evidence, detectives were unable to prosecute the case due to the child's age and information that was disclosed publicly.

In June, Statesville investigators were contacted by Iredell County Social Services with new information about the victim. An interview with the victim reopened the case. Detectives got warrants for multiple charges against Steven Joseph Borek, 60, based on new evidence.

Borek was found in a camper at a Pilot truck stop in Rowan County on Wednesday, July 3. He was taken into custody by U.S. Marshals after a standoff. When agents forced their way into the camper, they found Borek inside suffering from a self-inflicted knife wound. Borek was taken to a Winston-Salem hospital and is expected to survive.

Borek was charged with six counts of first-degree statutory sex offense and six counts of indecent liberties with a minor. He will be taken into custody once released from the hospital.

Note: WCNC instituted a policy in March 2021 regarding the broadcast or posting of mugshots.

WCNC will only air or post a mugshot if the person has been formally charged with a crime and in a few other cases. The exceptions include: If it appears the person could be a danger to themselves or others or if they are wanted by authorities; to differentiate between people with a common name; if the photos could encourage more victims to come forward. The news-editorial leadership may also decide to use a mugshot based on the severity of the crime(s) committed and/or the level of public interest in the crime and ensuing criminal proceedings
