Charlotte cracking down on unofficial parties during CIAA weekend

CIAA commissioner Jacqie McWilliams said authorities will shut down any unofficial parties using the CIAA name because they haven't talked to promoters or venues about how to keep people safe.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — The 2019 CIAA Tournament is kicking into high gear this week in Charlotte and security officials are hard at work to keep everyone safe during the event.

Part of that is the crackdown on unofficial parties using the CIAA logo. CIAA commissioner Jacqie McWilliams said Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Chief Kerr Putney and Mecklenburg County Sheriff Gerry McFadden have done a good job of working with venues and communicating with promoters what they can and can't do during CIAA weekend.

With thousands of people coming to Charlotte for the tournament and its events, McWilliams said authorities will shut down any unofficial parties using the CIAA name because they haven't talked to promoters or venues about how to keep people safe. Those unofficial parties have caused trouble in years past.

"If people see events on social media that are attached to us that our logo is not on, then that's not our event," McWilliams said.

Before you spend your money on a ticket, CIAA officials want people to look for the official CIAA logo on any ticket or website promoting an event. If you don't see the logo, it's not official and could be shut down.

"If you're here for CIAA, understand that you have a responsibility to value this conference and city and to protect the brand for everybody," McWilliams said.
