Man accused of breaking into Ballantyne home, raping woman denied bond

Santerius Allen is facing numerous charges after police allegedly caught him inside the victim's home in Ballantyne on Wednesday.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — A man charged with rape in a south Charlotte sexual assault was denied bond during a court hearing on Thursday.

Santerius Qwayshawn Allen, 32, is facing multiple charges in connection with an alleged attack in Ballantyne, according to Charlotte-Mecklenburg police. The assault happened around 10 a.m. on Jan. 24 at a home on Chilvary Drive. When officers arrived, they heard screaming from inside the house.

Allen was found by officers inside the home and he was immediately taken into custody. Officers allege that Allen broke into the woman's home through a window and sexually assaulted her. The woman's 15-year-old daughter was home during the incident and called 911, CMPD said. The teen was not hurt.

Allen was charged with breaking and entering, first-degree kidnapping, second-degree rape, second-degree sexual offense, sexual battery and assault on a female in connection with the attack. During a court appearance Thursday, the district attorney's office requested that Allen remain in jail without bond due to the severity of the charges and his criminal history.

The judge granted that request, and Allen was denied bond. A neighbor of the victim spoke during Thursday's hearing and said the assault "destroyed the fabric of our community." Allen asked to defend himself in court but was appointed a public defender by the judge. He is scheduled to appear in court again on Feb. 13.

Police say that this is an active investigation. WCNC Charlotte is following this story and will provide updates as new information is released.

The news-editorial leadership may also decide to use a mugshot based on the severity of the crime(s) committed and/or the level of public interest in the crime and ensuing criminal proceedings.
