David Royce Brown, 41, is charged with second-degree murder and habitual impaired driving.

CONCORD, N.C. — A man is facing charges after police say he hit and killed a person on a Concord road Friday afternoon.

The Concord Police Department said it happened just before 1:30 p.m. along Davidson Highway near Winecoff School Road, east of I-85. Officers said 35-year-old John Lee Stevenson Jr. was walking west on the highway when 41-year-old David Royce Brown hit and killed him while driving a Nissan Titan pickup truck.

Brown was arrested, and police said impairment appeared to be a key factor in the incident. He's now charged with second-degree murder and habitual impaired driving.

Brown is being held in the Cabarrus County jail with no bond.

Note: WCNC instituted a policy in March 2021 regarding the broadcast or posting of mugshots.

WCNC will only air or post a mugshot if the person has been formally charged with a crime and in a few other cases. The exceptions include: If it appears the person could be a danger to themselves or others or if they are wanted by authorities; to differentiate between people with a common name; if the photos could encourage more victims to come forward. The news-editorial leadership may also decide to use a mugshot based on the severity of the crime(s) committed and/or the level of public interest in the crime and ensuing criminal proceedings.
