ROWAN COUNTY, N.C. -- A former Rowan County Detention Center officer is charged with providing illegal drugs to inmates, according to authorities.

Dwayne Lamont Smith, 26, was suspended on December 17 after an investigation indicated that he provided illegal drugs to inmates.

Smith was charged with two counts of providing a controlled substance to inmates and one felony count of providing a controlled substance to inmates.

Smith is accused of providing marijuana, prescription medication and tobacco products to inmates at the Rowan County Dentition facility. The report also stated Smith allowed inmates to use his personal cellphone.

Smith was also terminated from his position as a correction officer.

He was placed in the Iredell County Detention Center under a $15,000 bond.
