Escaped NC inmate captured in Buncombe County

Authorities are asking the public to be on alert for an escaped inmate.

BUNCOMBE COUNTY, N.C. -- After avoiding capture overnight and sparking a massive manhunt, an escaped inmate is back in custody.

Authorities asked the public to be on alert for escaped inmate 42-year-old Michael Calloway Thursday morning.

According to the Buncombe County Sheriff's Office, around 1:30 p.m. Wednesday a deputy contacted the head office to alert them that Calloway had escaped during a transport. Authorities said Calloway escaped somewhere around 117 Henderson Road in Asheville, North Carolina. They're asking the public to be on alert for Calloway who is believed to be in the Hendersonville Road/Deerfield area.

According to our NBC affiliate, WYFF, Buncombe County Sheriff Van Duncan announced Calloway's capture during a press conference Thursday morning.

Prior to Calloway's capture, residents around the search area were asked to keep their doors locked and cell phones nearby. Duncan said they received dozens of tips overnight and thanked the public for their help in the inmate's capture.
