CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Police have identified the man they say shot and injured a CMPD officer late Saturday night.
25-year old Joshulae Matthews-Vincent Carter is facing attempted murder charges, but is currently in the hospital after he was hit by return fire from police.
Close-up video of the front door outside this home on Honey Hill Lane shows massive bullet holes and plenty of them. This is the aftermath tonight of a shootout Saturday night. Neighbor Thomas McKinney says he heard initial shots fired, then saw the moment when police arrived and confronted Carter.
"He was just acting like nothing was happening and as the cops approached him he opened fire," McKinney said. "They returned fire, then that's when the standoff kind of began."
Carter was hit and suffered life-threatening injuries. CMPD Lieutenant Andy Harris was also shot, but was released from the hospital.
"It was crazy," McKinney said. "I'm still shook up I haven't slept."
William Spibey says a stray bullet hit his car parked near all the gunfire.
"Gas gauge was down real low, and I went to get gas this morning and one of the bullets had ricocheted and hit my gas tank," Spibey said.
The officer-involved shooting took place just two nights before Monday night's city council meeting, where CMPD is scheduled to request for their department to get 150 new taser devices, which along with the additional equipment and warranty coverage for them, would cost over $278,000.
Once he's out of the hospital, Carter will be charged with three counts of assault on a law enforcement officer with a firearm, two counts of attempted murder and other violent crime charges.
There was also another male victim who police say was shot by Carter and found in an apartment. His injuries aren't life threatening and they haven't identified him.
