Suspect charged with murder in northeast Charlotte homicide

One victim was initially transported to the hospital with life-threatening injuries.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Police charge a suspect with murder after a man was found is dead following a shooting in northeast Charlotte Friday. 

Shortly before 4 p.m., CMPD officers responded near 3000 Azalea Hills Drive, which is located near the intersection of Mallard Creek Road and West Mallard Creek Church Road.

Paramedics located a man suffering from a gunshot wound outside a home. He was transported to an area hospital for treatment of life-threatening injuries. That person, who was later identified as Nathaniel Raul Newberry, later succumbed to their injuries.

Police said they made contact with 27-year-old Tyquis Jenkins at the scene when they first arrived. Jenkins was taken to CMPD headquarters and interview. At the conclusion of the interview, Jenkins was charged with Newberry's murder and possession of a firearm by a felon.

Homicide Detectives canvassed the area to determine whether there are any additional witnesses to this incident.

 At least three people were questioned immediately after the shooting, CMPD told WCNC Charlotte's Chloe Leshner.

WCNC's Chloe Leshner observed police officers escorting children home from a nearby bus stop.
