CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Headquarters returned to daily work flow after being evacuated Tuesday when a suspicious package was discovered in the building.
Police say the threat was called in around 4:30 p.m. Charlotte Fire was called to the scene to assist CMPD with the threat. CMPD tweeted just before 5 p.m. that a suspicious package was found, prompting the evacuation.
“One of our K9 bomb dogs named Boomer came in and did an assessment of the package and the dog did alert on the package to indicate that there was some further work that needed to be done,” said CMPD Captain Mike Campagna.
Campagna went on to say that the package was then removed from the building by a bomb squad robot and secured in a container where it will be taken to a remote location and rendered safe. Campagna was unable to confirm any of the contents of the package Tuesday evening.
"Because of the dangers associated with a suspicious package, it is a slow, methodical process we go through just to ensure the safety of our employees, so it will take us some time before we figure out all of the ins and outs."
Wednesday afternoon, CMPD said the device was not incendiary, but that there were general indicators of an explosive device.
Police on scene confirmed to NBC Charlotte's Mark Boyle that the package was about the size of a shoebox and was sent to CMPD Headquarters strangely wrapped and was not addressed like normal mail. Out of concern and an abundance of caution, police called the bomb squad on scene.
CMPD told reporters Wednesday that only officers and employees will be allowed to park at headquarters for the time being. Security has been increased for the time being with guard rails and officers outside.
