UNION COUNTY, N.C. -- Another local law enforcement agency is putting "In God We Trust" decals on their vehicles sparking the age-old debate of church and state.
"In God We Trust," said Sheriff Eddie Cathey, with the Union County Sheriff Office.
Those four powerful words Cathey said will now be wedged between the American and North Carolina state flag on the back of the Union County Sheriff's patrol cars.
"I think this helps our agency," said Cathey.
Nearly 300 vehicles will have the upgraded look. The decision comes on the heels of another local law enforcement agency adding a similar decal last week.
"I think it might cause a problem," said Quade Mathis, a Union County resident.
Union County joins the Stallings and China Grove Police Departments, Beaufort as well as Alamance County Sheriff's Offices.
The American Civil Liberties Union released this statement saying in part:
"These displays are often divisive and send a message that the government favors people of certain beliefs over others."
Justin Love has been on the force for four years.
"What's it like being out there especially today in law enforcement?" asked NBC Charlotte's Xavier Walton.
"It's a whole another world," said Love.
Every day, he's fulfilling a childhood dream, but he knows there's no guarantee that dream doesn't become a nightmare.
"Every day you put this uniform on there's no guarantee you're going to come home," said Love.
Love says with the new "In God We Trust" decals he feels like it adds an extra blanket of security.
