Cyclist hurt in China Grove wreck finally identified

A cyclist was seriously hurt in a crash on US 29 in China Grove earlier this month. He remained unidentified, according to police, until they asked for help.

CHINA GROVE, N.C. — A cyclist who was hurt in a crash in China Grove last week was unidentified, for days until police asked for help figuring out who he is.

The China Grove Police Department responded to a crash involving a cyclist and a pickup truck a little after 6 a.m. on Oct. 7. The crash happened on U.S. 29, between East Liberty Street and East Church Street in the area near Subway and the BP gas station, police said.

Officers said a driver in a pickup truck going south hit the cycling from behind, giving him serious injuries. The cyclist had no identifying information and due to his injuries, officers weren't been able to speak with him, China Grove police said.

However, after the call was put out to help identify the cyclist, it was determined who he is.

"The identity will be released once family has been located and notified," China Grove police said. "Thank you for all your help."

Investigators haven't released any suspect information or announced any arrests in connection with the crash.

Note: WCNC instituted a new policy in March 2021 regarding the broadcast or posting of mugshots.

WCNC will only air or post a mugshot if the person has been formally charged with a crime and in a few other cases. The exceptions include: If it appears the person could be a danger to themselves or others or if they are wanted by authorities; to differentiate between people with a common name; if the photos could encourage more victims to come forward. The news-editorial leadership may also decide to use a mugshot based on the severity of the crime(s) committed and/or the level of public interest in the crime and ensuing criminal proceedings.
