Suspect in deadly east Charlotte crash charged with reckless driving

A passenger in the van was thrown from the vehicle when it flipped over after crashing into another vehicle, police said.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — A man is facing multiple charges in connection with a deadly east Charlotte crash that happened in February, police said.

Multiple agencies responded to a crash at the intersection of North Sharon Amity Road and Central Avenue around 2 a.m. on Feb. 10. When officers arrived, they found a Chevrolet Uplander minivan on its side and a Honda Accord with damage to the front end. A passenger in the Chevrolet, Abigail Ramirez Romero, died at the scene. Two other passengers were taken to the hospital.

Investigators determined the driver of the Chevrolet ran a red light and crashed into the Honda. The collision caused the minivan to flip over, killing Romero.

The driver of the Chevrolet was identified as 22-year-old Dimas Ramirez. He was arrested by CMPD on July 8 and charged with felony death by motor vehicle, reckless driving, no driver's license and no insurance. Detectives initially suspected impairment as a factor in the crash, but Ramirez was not charged with DWI.

Anyone with information about this crash is asked to call Charlotte Crime Stoppers at 704-334-1600.

Note: WCNC instituted a policy in March 2021 regarding the broadcast or posting of mugshots.

WCNC will only air or post a mugshot if the person has been formally charged with a crime and in a few other cases. The exceptions include: If it appears the person could be a danger to themselves or others or if they are wanted by authorities; to differentiate between people with a common name; if the photos could encourage more victims to come forward. The news-editorial leadership may also decide to use a mugshot based on the severity of the crime(s) committed and/or the level of public interest in the crime and ensuing criminal proceedings.

WCNC Charlotte is choosing to show the mugshot of the suspect in this case because a person died in the crash
