Suspect in crash that killed 3 relatives arrested in Paris, deputies say

Three people were killed and four others were injured in the crash along Bethel School Road and North Carolina 24/27 in Midland.

CABARRUS COUNTY, N.C. — A suspected impaired driver who was wanted for a crash that killed three people, including a 12-year-old boy, was arrested in Paris, France, Cabarrus County deputies said.

The crash happened at the intersection of Bethel School Road and North Carolina 24/27 in Midland on Sept. 20. Three people were killed and four others were injured when a Toyota Sienna triggered a multi-vehicle crash that also involved a 2019 Toyota Rav4 and 2015 Chevrolet Silverado pickup truck. Witnesses told deputies that the Sienna made an abrupt swerve into oncoming traffic, triggering the deadly wreck.

Deputies said they were able to obtain enough evidence to suggest the driver of the Toyota, 19-year-old Solomon Gheorghe, was impaired at the time of the crash. Warrants were obtained for his arrest on three counts of felony death by motor vehicle and one felony count of serious injury by motor vehicle. Gheorghe was later located and arrested in Paris by the U.S. Marshal's Service. The process of extradition back to the U.S. is underway, according to the Cabarrus County Sheriff's Office.

The crash killed 49-year-old Nicolae Gheorghe, 47-year-old Adela Gheorghe and a 12-year-old child. All three victims are related to the suspect, police said. The road was closed for hours while detectives investigated the crash to determine what caused the incident.

WCNC will only air or post a mugshot if the person has been formally charged with a crime and in a few other cases. The exceptions include: If it appears the person could be a danger to themselves or others or if they are wanted by authorities; to differentiate between people with a common name; if the photos could encourage more victims to come forward. The news-editorial leadership may also decide to use a mugshot based on the severity of the crime(s) committed and/or the level of public interest in the crime and ensuing criminal proceedings.
