Highway Patrol looking for Freightliner in deadly I-40 crash

A Morganton man died when he was hit by the driver of a tractor-trailer on Interstate 40 on Wednesday morning, troopers said.

BURKE COUNTY, N.C. — A Morganton man was hit and killed by a tractor-trailer along Interstate 40 in Burke County on Wednesday, state troopers said.

The crash happened around 9:30 a.m. on westbound I-40 near exit 104, which is for Enola Road in Morganton. Troopers said a newer Freightliner Cascadia was traveling west when the driver hit a pedestrian. The truck driver left the scene before police arrived.

The pedestrian, identified as 25-year-old Alfredo Hernandez-Son, died at the scene.

State troopers believe the driver was in a 2018 or newer Freightliner Cascadia that's now missing the right front headlight assembly. The truck also has damage to the front bumper and hood.
