CHARLOTTE, N.C. — The suspect in a deadly north Charlotte shooting will not face the death penalty, according to court documents obtained by WCNC Charlotte on Thursday.
The shooting happened in May on Hoover Drive, just off Nevin Road and near Gibbon Road. The victim, who was later identified as 26-year-old James Chambers III, was declared dead at the scene by paramedics.
The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department confirmed the scene was being investigated as a homicide.
Police said they arrested 29-year-old Zacharias Lowery as a suspect in the case.
After a hearing in Mecklenburg county court on Thursday, state prosecutors said they will not seek the death penalty.
