CMPD identifies woman killed in southeast Charlotte shooting, suspect charged

A woman was found with a gunshot wound and died at the scene, CMPD said.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — WCNC Charlotte has chosen to use this mugshot because of the nature of the alleged crime.

A 23-year-old woman was shot and killed in southeast Charlotte near Matthews early Friday morning, Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police said.

The shooting happened along Woodway Oak Circle in the Mission Matthews Place apartments around 2 a.m., police said. That complex is just off Independence Boulevard.

When officers arrived, they found 23-year-old Jenyah Kishawn Skyye Wright suffering from a gunshot wound. She was pronounced dead at the scene by Medic.

Later in the day Friday, CMPD said 25-year-old Charles Wittington Hodge Jr. had been arrested at the scene. He was charged with murder and not granted bond.

The investigation is still ongoing. Anyone with information is asked to call Charlotte Crime Stoppers at 704-334-1600. Witnesses can also call 704-432-TIPS to speak directly with homicide detectives.

Note: WCNC instituted a policy in March 2021 regarding the broadcast or posting of mugshots.

WCNC will only air or post a mugshot if the person has been formally charged with a crime and in a few other cases. The exceptions include: If it appears the person could be a danger to themselves or others or if they are wanted by authorities; to differentiate between people with a common name; if the photos could encourage more victims to come forward. The news-editorial leadership may also decide to use a mugshot based on the severity of the crime(s) committed and/or the level of public interest in the crime and ensuing criminal proceedings.
