MONROE, N.C. — A 17-year-old was killed and an 18-year-old was hurt in a double shooting in Monroe on Monday, investigators said.
Monroe Police responded to a reported shooting along North Secrest Avenue around 9:30 p.m. When officers arrived, they found two teens suffering from gunshot wounds. One of the victims, 17-year-old Jadyn Rowdy, died at the scene. The second victim, 18-year-old Jontavis Hood, was taken to the hospital and is expected to survive.
Detectives said the victims were in the yard of a house when another group arrived. The groups got into an argument that escalated to a shooting. Investigators claim multiple shooters ran away before police arrived.
On Wednesday, police announced the arrest of 20-year-old Christopher Thomas Barrett. He is now charged with first-degree murder, attempted first-degree murder, assault with a deadly weapon inflicting serious injury, and discharging a firearm into an occupied dwelling.
Barrett was processed into jail Wednesday night. Bond for him hasn't been set as of publication.
The investigation is still ongoing. Anyone with information is asked to call the Monroe Police Department at 704-282-4700. Witnesses can also call Union County Crime Stoppers at 704-283-5600.
Note: WCNC instituted a policy in March 2021 regarding the broadcast or posting of mugshots.
WCNC will only air or post a mugshot if the person has been formally charged with a crime and in a few other cases. The exceptions include: If it appears the person could be a danger to themselves or others or if they are wanted by authorities; to differentiate between people with a common name; if the photos could encourage more victims to come forward. The news-editorial leadership may also decide to use a mugshot based on the severity of the crime(s) committed and/or the level of public interest in the crime and ensuing criminal proceedings.
