Charlotte man pleads guilty to 2018 murder, sentenced to over 30 years

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — A Mecklenburg County judge sentenced a man to spend over 30 years in prison after he pleaded guilty to attacking a person with a hammer and fatally stabbing them in November 2018.

Carlton Hancock, 52, pleaded guilty to second-degree murder and robbery with a dangerous weapon on Monday in Mecklenburg County court. The jury for Hancock's trial was being selected when he entered a plea agreement. Hancock was sentenced to 310 to 384 months in prison for the murder and an additional 67 to 93 months for the robbery.

Hancock killed Brian Carriker, 56, on Nov. 18, 2018 by stabbing him, according to court records. The two men were at a house on Tinnin Avenue when Hancock attacked Carriker with a hammer and punched him before fatally stabbing him.

After the stabbing, Hancock fled the area in Carriker's truck. He was arrested later that day in High Point, North Carolina.

Hancock was charged with second-degree murder, robbery with a dangerous weapon, assault by strangulation, and common law robbery for the incident. The latter two charges were dropped with the plea agreement.

In 2011, Hancock was convicted in federal court of possessing stolen firearms in Wake County. He was sentenced to five years in prison for this offense.
