CHARLOTTE, N.C. — After another deadly weekend in the Queen City, the 2019 homicide count for Charlotte is up to 92.
There were three homicides over the weekend, bringing the city to that number. Of the latest homicides, two involved shootings. In the other, police say a truck intentionally hit a motorcycle.
Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police investigated four shootings total in a 72-hour span over the weekend. It was the third straight weekend with multiple shootings in the Queen City.
Charlotte's homicide count for the year has now well surpassed the total number of homicides in 2018, which was 57. The city is on track for the deadliest year in decades.
"We're always going to make the plea for calm and for peace and to let our detectives and crime scene officers do their jobs," said a CMPD spokesperson. "For us, one violent offense, one death, is one too many."
The Charlotte-Mecklenburg NAACP held a news conference Monday afternoon to address the spike in homicides and gun violence this year.
"We believe city leadership has failed us," an NAACP member said. "We've been talking about the rising murders since the beginning of the year and it feels like it's to no avail."
