CHARLOTTE, N.C. — A suspect in a stolen vehicle died in a crash during a police chase on Interstate 77 Sunday night, detectives said.
Charlotte-Mecklenburg police responded to a report of a stolen vehicle on South Tryon Street near Steele Creek Road around 9 p.m., investigators said. The victim told police an armed suspect stole a 2020 Dodge Challenger at gunpoint before speeding away.
Officers later spotted the car on I-77 near Carowinds Boulevard. When officers attempted to pull the driver over, CMPD says the suspect refused to stop and officers initiated a pursuit. The driver later attempted to exit I-77 near Tyvola Road and lost control, crashing at a high rate of speed.
The suspect, identified Tuesday as 18-year-old Ramon Zavari Miller, was pronounced dead at the scene. Officers report the Challenger overturned several times and that Miller was ejected from the car. CMPD said none of its officers' vehicles were involved in the crash and all officers were uninjured. Miller's next of kin have been notified.
No further information has been released by CMPD. Anyone with information about this incident or any other is asked to call Charlotte Crime Stoppers at 704-334-1600.
