Man charged in deadly east Charlotte crash

Two vehicles were involved in the crash, CMPD said.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — A crash in east Charlotte left one man dead and one in custody.

The crash happened around 5 a.m. on Monday at the intersection of Hood Road and Plaza Road Extension, not far from Reedy Creek Elementary, according to the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department.

Two Ford trucks were found badly damaged at the scene. One of the drivers, Lee Staten, 57, was pronounced dead at the scene.

An investigation revealed Edwin Bellorin, 30, failed to stop at a red light and struck the truck driven by Staten. Police say Bellorin showed signs of impairment at the scene. He suffered minor injuries.

Bellorin is charged with felony death by motor vehicle. He was released from jail on a $45,000 bond. His next court date is on Tuesday.
