Former high school soccer coach arrested on sexual assault charges

Maxwell Fletcher was arrested for the second time after Lincoln County investigators identified another victim.

LINCOLN COUNTY, N.C. — A former East Lincoln High School soccer coach is in jail on sexual assault charges after being arrested last week, records show.

Maxwell Fletcher, 30, was arrested after the Lincoln County Sheriff's Office identified another victim in the case. He was previously arrested in South Carolina in May on several felony charges related to child sex assault. Fletcher's new charges include second-degree forcible sex offense and crime against nature.

In addition to coaching, Fletcher was a teacher at W.C. Friday Middle School in Dallas, part of the Gaston County school system. Lincoln County Schools told WCNC Charlotte that Fletcher was an assistant coach in the fall of 2023, but is no longer associated with them. Deputies say Fletcher was also a coach for the Dry Pond travel baseball team based in Denver.

Fletcher is being held at the Lincoln County jail on a $100,000 bond. Anyone with information about this case is asked to call the Lincoln County Sheriff's Office at 704-732-9050.

Note: WCNC instituted a policy in March 2021 regarding the broadcast or posting of mugshots.

WCNC will only air or post a mugshot if the person has been formally charged with a crime and in a few other cases. The exceptions include: If it appears the person could be a danger to themselves or others or if they are wanted by authorities; to differentiate between people with a common name; if the photos could encourage more victims to come forward. The news-editorial leadership may also decide to use a mugshot based on the severity of the crime(s) committed and/or the level of public interest in the crime and ensuing criminal proceedings.

WCNC Charlotte has chosen to use this mugshot because the investigation is ongoing and more victims may come forward.
