GASTON COUNTY, N.C. — A former Gaston County deputy is facing kidnapping and assault charges for an alleged domestic incident earlier this month, court records show.
Edward Stivala, 33, was arrested after he allegedly hit his wife while they were driving and refused to let her call 911, investigators say. Stivala was charged with second-degree kidnapping, assault on a female and interfering with emergency communications.
A spokesperson for the Gaston County Sheriff's Office confirmed Stivala was fired after his arrest. Stivala was a part-time deputy who joined the department last July.
Stivala's wife alleges that this is not the first instance of abuse during their relationship. Stivala was taken into custody on March 3 and he posted bond the next day, according to court records.

Note: WCNC instituted a policy in March 2021 regarding the broadcast or posting of mugshots.
WCNC will only air or post a mugshot if the person has been formally charged with a crime and in a few other cases. The exceptions include: If it appears the person could be a danger to themselves or others or if they are wanted by authorities; to differentiate between people with a common name; if the photos could encourage more victims to come forward. The news-editorial leadership may also decide to use a mugshot based on the severity of the crime(s) committed and/or the level of public interest in the crime and ensuing criminal proceedings.
