'A very caring person' | Family of Gastonia woman killed in May shooting asks public for help

Zanayah White was allegedly shot and killed by her boyfriend on May 18. Her family is still struggling to cope with the tragedy.

GASTONIA, N.C. — A Gastonia family is still trying to pick up the pieces after one of their own was shot and killed earlier this year.

On May 18, 19-year-old Zanayah White was allegedly shot and killed by her boyfriend, 24-year-old David McDowell.

It's been almost two months since the tragedy. Friends like Roger Hunter described White as a selfless person and hard worker.

"I couldn't believe it," Hunter said. "I was hoping it was an accident and when I found out, it just tore my heart apart. [She was] a very caring person, she cared about a lot of people.”

The family spoke to WCNC Charlotte's Austin Walker on the phone Thursday and said they are still feeling the pain. In response, a GoFundMe was started. Her stepfather, Keith White, was shot in the face years ago and lives with challenges. She would help him from time to time.

The family is asking for support and the money would go towards funeral costs, medical expenses and Keith's day-to-day life.
