19-year-old man charged with bringing loaded rifle to Charlotte high school parking lot

An unrelated call about an unsubstantiated threat led to officers discovering him, CMPD said.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — A 19-year-old is accused of bringing a rifle to a Charlotte high school campus Thursday.

The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department said a lockdown was prompted at Julius L. Chambers High School around 11:15 a.m. after officers received an unsubstantiated threat. Police canvassed the area and located a vehicle on campus with the 19-year-old male driver inside. He had a loaded rifle inside, although officers noted he was unrelated to the original call about the threat.

Police took him into custody and charged him with possession of a firearm on educational property. Additionally, he was charged with possessing a firearm with an obliterated or altered serial number.

CMPD reminds parents and caretakers not to bring weapons on campus or have them in vehicles when picking up a child.
