Gun found at Rocky River High School, CMS confirms

The gun was immediately taken, and the district said there is no threat to students or staff.

MINT HILL, N.C. — A student brought a gun to Rocky River High School on Monday, the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools district confirmed. It's the second time this month a student has brought a gun to that school.

The gun was immediately taken from the student when found Monday, and the district said there is no threat to students or staff.

The district confirmed possession of a weapon in district schools is a Code of Student Conduct violation with serious consequences, but district leaders have not further explained what consequences the student in question is facing.

"As always, the safety and well-being of our students and staff is our top priority, therefore we encourage all students to report weapons or threats to a trusted adult," the district said, in part, in a message to families.

On March 1, CMS confirmed a student had brought a gun to the high school, and it had been confiscated.

Keeping guns off campus is a priority for families and for CMS, but not an easy task. However, progress has been made. In the 2021-22 school year, 29 guns were confiscated from students on campus. Last year saw six guns taken. A total of six guns have been found to date this school year, according to CMS.
