Charlotte church's heating unit stolen amid freezing weather

The pastor says it will cost the church thousands of dollars to replace the unit.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — The heating unit was stolen from an east Charlotte church over the weekend, police say.

It happened Saturday night at the Greater Bethel AME Church, which is just off The Plaza in Shannon Park. Church leaders say because the building has no way to beat the cold weather, all services, including after-school care, will be impacted.

"We're very much a part of the community," Rev. Abdue Knox said. "For someone to do that to us, it angered me initially. But now, I'm OK, because I know that God is still going to get the glory out of this."

Knox said the damage will cost the church thousands of dollars to fix and that he wished the thieves would have just asked for the money rather than damaging the church.

CMPD hasn't released any suspect information. Anyone with information about this incident is asked to call Charlotte Crime Stoppers at 704-334-1600.
