HICKORY, N.C. -- Hickory Police have fired one of their own after an investigation into injuries an arrestee sustained while in custody back in November 2013 revealed wrongdoing, the City of Hickory says.
Hickory Police Sergeant Robert George was initially placed on administrative leave with pay following the incident, but has since been fired from the department. George was officially terminated January 3.
The City of Hickory decided to fire Sergeant George following the results of an administrative investigation. The City says the investigation revealed Sergeant George violated departmental policies governing use of force, treatment of persons in custody and unsatisfactory performance.
I regret that this incident occurred and I have asked the NC State Bureau of Investigation to conduct an outside independent investigation for any criminal wrongdoing of the incident , said Chief Tom Adkins. Since the investigation was conducted by the NC State Bureau of Investigation, the Hickory Police Department will not make any statement at this time to any potential criminal process.
No further information will be released, the City says.
