Anyone with information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers at (704) 334-1600 to share any anonymous tips.
Powell's sister reached out to WCNC Charlotte later in May to share fond memories of him. Michelle Powell-Jones said those fond moments spanned from childhood to adulthood.
"Growing up, we would wait for Santa to come," she said. "Also as an adult, he was always there if I needed him. One time I was visiting my aunt in Connecticut and my back went out, so I couldn't drive back to Charlotte. He dropped everything and took a plane to New Haven and drove my car back to Charlotte with my doggie Lola."
Powell-Jones said her brother was a devoted father and gave of himself to family and friends. He also loved a good debate. Most importantly, Powell-Jones said his children all provide open windows into his legacy.
"They each have something, whether it be his mannerism, his features," she said. "He was one of a kind and loved very much by his family and friends."
