CHARLOTTE, N.C. — A 16-year-old was arrested after a fight left a man dead at a group home in northwest Charlotte on Thursday, police said.
The incident happened around 8 p.m. at a group home on Swearngan Road, Charlotte-Mecklenburg police said. When officers arrived, they found 54-year-old Ganiyu Ibrahim dead from his injuries. His death was ruled a homicide by detectives.
Officers believe Ibrahim died following a fight with a 16-year-old. Police say Ibrahim lived and worked at the group home.
The suspect is charged with first-degree murder and robbery with a dangerous weapon in connection with the incident.
Investigators haven't identified the suspect due to his age.
"It should infuriate all of us that it's the fourth day of January and we're already on the scene of a homicide involving a juvenile," Maj. Bret Balamucki said. "We hope that as we move forward in 2024 we continue to work with the district attorney's office to stop this trend and this consistent response to acts of violence by young adults and juveniles."
