CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Editor's Note: This story discusses domestic violence, which may include descriptions of violent acts. Reader discretion is advised.
An investigation is underway after a deadly officer-involved shooting in north Charlotte, according to the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department.
It happened around 12:30 a.m. on Roundstone Way, which is a residential area near Reames Road. Officers responded to a domestic violence where they found a man had stabbed a woman multiple times.
An officer fired his weapon, shooting the man, CMPD said. He was pronounced dead on scene.
The woman was taken to the hospital with life-threatening injuries, police said.
This is the third officer-involved shooting in the greater Charlotte area in the last week. Sunday morning, one person died after being shot by a police officer in Charlotte's South End neighborhood after officers responded to a domestic dispute. On Wednesday, one person was shot and killed after pointing a gun at sheriff's deputies, the Cabarrus County Sheriff's Office said.
"We don’t ever want to see an ending like this," CMPD Chief Johnny Jennings said following Friday's shooting. "At the same time, it also shows dangers of domestic violence calls for service when officers have to respond to these scenes and and have no idea what they’re going to be stepping into. "
CMPD told WCNC Charlotte this is the second time a domestic violence situation has ended in gunfire. Kathleen Lockwood with the North Carolina Coalition Against Domestic Violence said, domestic violence homicides in the state are skyrocketing.
"As of August 12, we found evidence of our 45th domestic violence homicide," Lockwood said. "It's only two shy from all of 2022.”
She also said across North Carolina, in one day, over 1,400 people were provided domestic violence services. She said that's more than 300 people per day that what it was a few years back.
The Coalition said to prevent events like these, people need to stay educated and know of the resources in the area for domestic violence victims. She said people should also learn and know behavior patterns that could lead to a deadly event.
"Another thing they can do is make sure organizations that provides these treatments and help are funded," Lockwood said.
