When deputies arrived, they found 69-year-old Mark Gray Leggette suffering from multiple injuries he suffered during the alleged attack. Leggette was conscious at the time but he'd been hit over the head with a blunt object, according to the sheriff's office report. Leggette was taken by ambulance to Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center.

Leggette's roommate, 61-year-old Greggory Gerald Warner, was taken into custody immediately. Multiple witnesses spoke with investigators about the incident and Warner was interviewed by detectives. He was charged with assault inflicting serious injury and given a $20,000 bond.

A 61-year-old man from Winston-Salem is facing charges after deputies said he beat his roommate to death at a Statesville senior living center.

Leggette died in the hospital a few days later. When deputies learned that Leggette died as a result of his injuries, they got a warrant against Warner for first-degree murder, which was served while he was still in jail. Warner is being held in the Iredell County jail without bond.

Note: WCNC instituted a policy in March 2021 regarding the broadcast or posting of mugshots.

WCNC will only air or post a mugshot if the person has been formally charged with a crime and in a few other cases. The exceptions include: If it appears the person could be a danger to themselves or others or if they are wanted by authorities; to differentiate between people with a common name; if the photos could encourage more victims to come forward. The news-editorial leadership may also decide to use a mugshot based on the severity of the crime(s) committed and/or the level of public interest in the crime and ensuing criminal proceedings.

WCNC Charlotte is choosing to show the mugshot of the suspect in this case because of the serious nature of his charges.
