Man wanted for dragging Iredell County deputy from car now in custody, sheriff's office says

Law enforcement arrested Cory Allen Leazer following a manhunt extending into Mecklenburg County.

MOORESVILLE, N.C. — The Iredell County Sheriff's Office arrested a man they say dragged a deputy from a car while trying to get away from a traffic stop Saturday.

The office said a deputy attempted a traffic stop at a business located along Oakridge Farm Highway near Mooresville, near West Park Avenue. The suspect, identified as 33-year-old Cory Allen Leazer, tried to flee by first pulling away from the deputy and getting back into his vehicle.

However, Leazer allegedly placed the car in drive as the deputy tried getting Leazer out, dragging the deputy between 15 to 20 feet. The deputy also fired his service gun but did not appear to hit Leazer.

The sheriff's office said the deputy got back into his patrol vehicle and tried again to stop Leazer, but the chase ended when both entered Rowan County because of Leazer's reported driving speed, traffic conditions, and concern for the safety of other drivers.

Leazer's vehicle was located shortly after in Mecklenburg County. A perimeter was established. Iredell County deputies and the Mecklenburg County Sheriff's Office eventually located him.

He is now in custody.
