KANNAPOLIS, N.C. — A stolen iPhone threatened a man's health, but a K9 unit was able to retrieve the phone just in time.
According to the Union County Sheriff's Office, deputies were called to the 1200 block of Fletcher Broome Road in Monroe on the report of a stolen cell phone. The victim said it was stolen from them in Kannapolis earlier that day.
While a stolen cell phone might not sound emergent to everyone, the victim uses the cell phone to monitor their insulin levels. It was critical for the phone to be found so it could be relinked to the person's insulin pump to prevent them from being hospitalized.
Authorities signaled the "Find My iPhone" app and searched a wide area but weren't able to find it. That's when Deputy Slover and his K9 Pike came to help with the search.
"After searching an area of over 15,000 square feet consisting of tall grass and vegetation, Pike successfully located the stolen phone," UCSO said in a statement to WCNC Charlotte.
There were multiple notifications on the phone's lock screen saying the victim needed a distribution of insulin immediately. Luckily, the insulin was administered, and the victim did not have to be hospitalized. The cell phone wasn't damaged, either.
