Man gets life sentence for running over, killing victim during attempted armed robbery

Christopher Chisholm, 29, was found guilty of first-degree murder and other charges tied to the incident.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — A man who was found guilty of killing another man during an attempted armed robbery in 2019 will spend the rest of his life in prison.

The Mecklenburg County District Attorney's Office announced the conviction of 29-year-old Christopher Chisholm on Wednesday. He was found guilty of first-degree murder, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, three counts of possession of a stolen firearm, breaking or entering a motor vehicle, and being a habitual felon. A jury found him guilty on all charges and a judge handed him a life sentence on the murder charge. The remaining charges saw consecutive sentences for Chisholm totaling more than 13 years.

The life sentence does not carry the possibility of parole.

Chisholm and another man tried to break into cars in the parking lot of Charlotte's Ayrsley Town Center in December 2019 and broke into the truck belonging to 56-year-old Robert Hopkins. Hopkins left a company holiday party and saw Chisholm in the front seat as he approached. Chisholm got out of the truck and into his own car's driver seat, and Hopkins placed himself in front of Chisholm's car to try to stop him. However, Chisholm instead ran over Hopkins and drove off.

Chisholm was found two days later by police in the same car used to run over Hopkins. He was captured after a high-speed chase. Stolen property was found in his car and lab testing confirmed blood found on his car's undercarriage belonged to Hopkins.
