Man accused of shooting at children in Charlotte indicted on federal charges

Court records show officers spoke with a witness who said two young boys ran up to the witness saying McNeil was allegedly shooting at them.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — A Charlotte man is facing federal charges after he allegedly shot at kids in 2022.

D’Angelo De’Mara McNeil, 34, appeared in federal court Tuesday on the charge of possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, according to the U.S. Attorney for the Western District of North Carolina.

The District Attorney's office said on June 2, 2022, the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department responded to an apartment complex after reports of someone shooting at children. The caller told police the person, identified as McNeil, drove away from the scene. 

CMPD found him in the parked vehicle in a nearby parking lot, and took him into custody. Officers found a handgun under the front passenger seat. The district attorney's office said the magazine was empty and there was one round in the chamber at the time.

Court records show officers spoke with a witness who said two young boys ran up to the witness saying McNeil was allegedly shooting at them. The witness said he saw McNeil chasing the kids, heard two gunshots, and saw McNeil put a gun in his pocket before leaving.

A second witness told officers two kids asked her if she could let them into the leasing office as an armed man was chasing them, according to court records.

McNeil is in federal custody, and is facing a maximum penalty of 15 years in prison.
