CHARLOTTE, N.C. — A man has been arrested in connection with the 1991 burglary and sexual assault of an 83-year-old woman, Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police announced.
According to CMPD, the woman was sleeping in her home on October 19, 1991, when she woke up and saw a man who broke in through a window and began to assault her. Detectives said the 83-year-old was able to fight off her attacker and was treated for her injuries.
DNA was collected at the scene and tested in 1991 and then again in 2018. Earlier this year, Louis Brown, 68, was identified was a suspect in the case based on DNA evidence. CMPD obtained warrants for Brown's arrest and detectives with CMPD's sexual assault cold case unit traveled to the Clarendon County Detention Center in Manning, South Carolina to interview Brown.
Brown remains in the custody of the Clarendon County Detention Center pending extradition. He is a registered sex offender and was convicted in 1992 for a burglary and sexual assault in South Carolina. Prior to being served warrants for this case, he was charged in a 2017 case involving sexual misconduct with a minor.
