CMPD charges man with murder after girlfriend dies in the hospital

Police arrested Freddy Renteria on Friday, after learning that his girlfriend's life-threatening condition "may not have been natural."

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department is investigating a homicide on Strider Drive in southeast Charlotte.

Police responded to an assist medic call around 3:30 a.m. early Thursday morning. At the scene on Strider Drive, police found 23-year-old Nataly Martinez unresponsive. Martinez was taken to the hospital with a life-threatening condition.

However, police at the scene quickly learned that Martinez's condition "may not have been natural."

After bringing in homicide detectives to conduct an investigation, police determined that Martinez's boyfriend, 25-year-old Freddy Renteria, was the sole suspect in causing her life-threatening condition.

Martinez died on Thursday at the hospital and Renteria's warrant was updated to murder. After an autopsy was conducted, the preliminary results confirmed homicide.

During CMPD's attempt to arrest Renteria outside of their jurisdiction, he tried to take his life and was taken to a nearby hospital.
