Man dies in custody in Rock Hill, less than 24 hours after being arrested

ROCK HILL, S.C. — An inmate died in custody in Rock Hill on Tuesday morning, according to the Rock Hill Police Department. He had been in custody less than 24 hours.

At 3:10 a.m. Tuesday, Rock Hill Police Department Corrections Officers found an inmate who was unresponsive in his cell. Officers rendered medical aid until EMS arrived. EMS arrived at the jail to provide medical care, but the inmate was confirmed to have died.

The inmate has not been identified beyond that he was 58 years old. He had been in custody since Monday afternoon for a charge of shoplifting. 

The Rock Hill Police Department is conducting an internal investigation, and police have called the State Law Enforcement Division (SLED) to conduct an independent investigation.
