MATTHEWS, N.C. — The Matthews Police Department says no explosives were found after a bomb threat was called in Thursday afternoon, but officers are now working to figure out who called the threat in.

In a tweet, the department first said the threat was made against Matthews Town Hall along Matthews Station Street. The building was secured and safely evacuated, and around 2:30 p.m. the scene was finally cleared.

In a news release sent out around that time, the department provided more details. The threat was sent via telephone call around 11 a.m., and officers worked to immediately evacuate the town hall and secure surrounding areas.

Matthews police called in the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department's Bomb Unit to ensure the building was thoroughly searched. Officers did eventually find a geocache box on the exterior of the building, and it was deemed safe. The thorough search did not result in the discovery of any explosives, and town hall is back open for business.

The investigation now pivots to figuring out who called the threat in. Anyone who has information is asked to call 704-847-5555.

Matthews Fire & EMS, the Charlotte Fire Department, and Medic all responded to help.
